Immigration Terminology Handout
- The above handout contains important and helpful information about immigration documents and terminology for students in F-1 status.
- Students in F-1 status are required to enroll in and complete a full course of study each semester. Only in very limited circumstances, a student can be permitted to study less than full time and maintain F-1 status. The acceptable reasons are outlined below.
- International students are given a program end date on their Form I-20s. This end date indicates the duration of the students’ stay in the United States. If you are not able to finish your degree program by the end date noted on your Form I-20, you may be eligible to request an extension of your program. The length of time allowed for an extension is based on the recommendation of your academic advisor.
Verification of F-1 Student On-Campus Employment for Social Security Number Application
- A Social Security Number (SSN) is a unique identification number that allows the United States government to monitor your taxable wages earned as an employee in the U.S. As an international student, you only qualify for a Social Security Number if you have secured legal employment (ie. On- campus employment).
- Curricular Practical Training is defined by the F-1 student visa regulations as training off-campus (ex. Internship) which is directly related to the student’s major(s) and must be either required for the student’s degree and/or for internship credit towards their degree program.
- OPT is a type of off-campus employment authorization available to students in legal F-1 immigration status for at least 9 months. In accordance with U.S. federal regulations, OISS is required to verify a student’s eligibility before legally recommending a student for OPT. This request obtains information regarding a student’s academic progress which is required to process your request for employment authorization.

Reduced Course Load

SEVIS Transfer Out
- This request is used to notify OISS of your intent to transfer your F-1 immigration status to another U.S. institution. We recommend you meet with OISS to submit this request. Please complete and submit this request to OISS along with proof of your admission to the other institution, in order for the OISS to release your SEVIS record to your new school.
- The above form will inform OISS of a student's need for specific requests.
- The above form will help OISS determine if an individual is eligible for a new Form I-20 (example: change of level).
